In a significant recruiting achievement for Virginia Tech, three-star offensive tackle Buddy Wegmans has officially pledged his commitment to the Hokies. The Charlotte Catholic (NC) product made his decision public on Thursday morning through social media, opting for Virginia Tech over several prominent Power Five programs, including Michigan, NC State, and Duke. His announcement sparked excitement among Hokie fans and further emphasized Virginia Tech’s rising momentum on the recruiting front.
Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 295 pounds, Wegmans has emerged as one of the top offensive line prospects in the region. His combination of size, refined footwork, and high motor has earned him a reputation as a formidable force on the field. Nationally, he’s ranked among the top 75 offensive tackles and is considered a top-25 prospect in the state of North Carolina. His recruitment soared after impressive performances at summer camps and a strong junior season anchoring a dominant high school offensive line.
“The fit just felt right,” Wegmans shared during his announcement. “Virginia Tech believed in me from the beginning, and I always felt like a priority. I’m excited to get started and be part of something special in Blacksburg.”
Wegmans’ decision came on the heels of an official visit to Virginia Tech, where he had the opportunity to bond with head coach Brent Pry, offensive line coach Ron Crook, and several current players. Sources familiar with the recruitment indicated that the program’s culture, coaching philosophy, and early playing opportunities played pivotal roles in swaying Wegmans toward the Hokies.
Coach Brent Pry expressed enthusiasm following the commitment, saying, “Buddy is the type of player who represents toughness and dedication. He’s got a big frame, plays with physicality, and still has so much untapped potential. We’re excited to welcome him to the Hokie family.”
Wegmans is expected to be a crucial addition to the Hokies’ offensive line unit, an area the coaching staff has prioritized heavily in the 2025 recruiting cycle. With several experienced linemen set to graduate in the coming seasons, Wegmans could have an opportunity to compete for playing time early in his collegiate career. His ability to play on either end of the offensive line adds to his value and was a major factor in Virginia Tech’s pursuit.
Recruiting experts have labeled Wegmans’ commitment a foundational element of the Hokies’ 2025 class, which now ranks within the top 35 nationally. Perhaps more notably, Virginia Tech secured his pledge despite stiff competition from traditional powerhouse Michigan and regional rivals NC State and Duke, a clear sign of the program’s increasing ability to attract top-tier regional talent.
Wegmans becomes the sixth player to commit to Virginia Tech in June and joins fellow offensive lineman Tremaine Wilson, forming the core of what is shaping up to be one of the strongest offensive line classes the Hokies have assembled in recent years.
Looking ahead, Wegmans plans to enroll early in January to begin offseason training, study the playbook, and acclimate to the college environment. His commitment marks more than just a recruiting win—it’s a strong signal that Virginia Tech is making real progress in building a powerful presence in the trenches.
