As the Green Bay Packers enter the 2025 offseason, one of the biggest uncertainties surrounding the team involves star cornerback Jaire Alexander. The former All-Pro has struggled to stay healthy, missing significant time in three of the last four seasons. Given his availability issues and the hefty remainder of his $84 million contract, the Packers are reportedly hesitant to continue paying him at that level. This situation has sparked speculation that Alexander may either be released or traded before the season begins.
To potentially avoid that outcome, the Packers have reached out to Alexander in an attempt to restructure his contract. However, it’s currently unclear whether Alexander is open to renegotiating his deal. If no progress is made on that front, it seems increasingly likely that Green Bay will move on from him, either through a trade or by releasing him outright.
Should Alexander become available, CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin suggests that the Las Vegas Raiders might be one of the teams interested in acquiring him. Las Vegas has made several moves to revamp its secondary during the 2025 offseason. The team released Jack Jones, added Eric Stokes via free agency, and selected Darien Porter in the NFL Draft. Despite these changes, the Raiders’ cornerback group remains relatively unproven and lacks depth, especially at the slot corner position.
At the moment, Darnay Holmes is listed as the team’s top option to cover the slot, but he hasn’t firmly established himself as a reliable starter. On the outside, Jakorian Bennett appears to be the most consistent performer following a strong 2024 campaign that helped him rebound from a difficult rookie year. Even so, the opposite cornerback spot remains unsettled. Porter and Decamerion Richardson are both young and lack NFL experience, while Eric Stokes has yet to live up to expectations after being drafted in the first round several years ago.
This uncertain situation in the Raiders’ secondary could prompt the team to consider adding a more seasoned player to bolster their depth and bring leadership to the room. Alexander, when healthy, has proven to be one of the league’s top cornerbacks and would certainly bring immediate credibility to Las Vegas’ defense. His ability to lock down top receivers and perform at a high level on the boundary would provide a boost to a defense that still has many questions to answer in the secondary.
However, Alexander’s injury history and expensive contract complicate matters. Given those concerns, it seems unlikely that the Raiders would pursue a trade for him, especially if they’d be on the hook for a significant portion of his salary. Las Vegas has been cautious in its spending, and taking on a high-risk, high-cost player like Alexander may not align with the team’s current strategy.
If the Packers ultimately decide to release Alexander and he hits free agency, the scenario changes. In that case, the Raiders—or any other team—could potentially sign him to a more team-friendly deal. At a lower cost and without the need to give up assets in a trade, Alexander might become a worthwhile gamble for Las Vegas, assuming he’s healthy and motivated to return to form.
Still, even under those conditions, there are doubts about whether Alexander would be a good fit. While he excels on the outside, the Raiders may be more focused on shoring up the slot cornerback role, which isn’t Alexander’s area of expertise. If the team prioritizes filling that specific need, they might pass on Alexander altogether and instead search for a player better suited to playing inside.
Ultimately, while the idea of Jaire Alexander joining the Raiders is intriguing on the surface, practical concerns make it unlikely. His injury history, current contract situation, and limited positional versatility all work against the move. Unless he becomes a low-cost free agent and the Raiders are still looking for help at outside corner, it’s more likely that Las Vegas will continue developing its current group and search for a true slot specialist elsewhere.
