Phenomenon Boost: Another big portal get for the Hokies, Jackson State Sensational WR Super star, COMMITS To the Hookies

Virginia Tech football head coach Brent Pry continues to make strategic moves in the NCAA transfer portal, securing another addition to the Hokies’ offense. Over the weekend, Pry and his staff landed Jackson State wide receiver Isaiah Spencer, adding much-needed depth and experience to the receiving corps. Spencer, who hails from Madison, Mississippi, stands at 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds. He brings a notable skill set to Blacksburg, having posted strong numbers during his time with the Jackson State Tigers.

Last season, Spencer made a significant impact on the field. He hauled in 35 receptions for a total of 660 yards and scored four touchdowns, boasting an impressive average of 18.8 yards per catch. Over his two years with Jackson State, Spencer played in 25 games and started in 13 of them. During that span, he caught 59 passes for 867 yards and found the end zone five times. With two years of NCAA eligibility still remaining, Spencer is expected to be a valuable contributor for Virginia Tech’s offense moving forward.

The Hokies are entering a transitional phase with their wide receiver unit after losing four key players from the 2023 season: Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Ali Jennings. All four have moved on from the program, with Lane being selected by the Washington Commanders in the NFL Draft. Meanwhile, Felton, Gosnell, and Jennings are pursuing opportunities at the professional level as undrafted free agents or through rookie minicamp invitations. Their departures left significant gaps in the receiving room, creating an urgent need for experienced replacements.

To address these losses, Virginia Tech has been active in both the winter and spring transfer windows. Earlier in the offseason, the Hokies added Cameron Seldon from Tennessee and Donavon Greene from Wake Forest. These two receivers, along with returning player Ayden Greene, are expected to see substantial playing time during the upcoming season. Now, with the arrival of Spencer, the Hokies have another reliable option to bolster their offense.

Spencer’s versatility makes him an appealing asset. He can play in the slot position, which could help offset the loss of Lane’s quickness and agility. At the same time, Spencer’s ability to stretch the field vertically gives Virginia Tech a legitimate deep-ball threat, which was a key component of Felton’s game. This flexibility will allow offensive coaches to deploy him in multiple roles, depending on matchups and game plans.

With Spencer’s commitment, Virginia Tech now counts seven new additions from the spring transfer portal window. This is on top of the 19 players the Hokies brought in during the winter portal period, reflecting a concerted effort by Brent Pry and his staff to reshape and reinforce the roster. These moves indicate a proactive approach to not only replacing lost talent but also improving the team’s depth and competitiveness for the upcoming season.

Isaiah Spencer’s addition represents more than just another name on the roster—it’s a strategic acquisition aimed at sustaining offensive production despite the turnover in personnel. As the Hokies look to build momentum heading into the fall, players like Spencer will be crucial in helping the team maintain a high level of play. With two years left to contribute, Spencer has both the time and opportunity to develop into a key playmaker for Virginia Tech.

The coaching staff and fans alike are excited to welcome Spencer to the Hokies family. His proven performance at Jackson State and his potential to fill immediate needs make him a noteworthy addition as the team continues preparing for the 2025 season. Welcome to Blacksburg, Isaiah Spencer.
