Sources within Team Canada claim that Auger-Aliassime played in apparent pain despite the straight-sets victory, subsequently denouncing the scheduling as “punishment” for lower-ranked countries. He apparently insisted that Mboko lead the charge, resulting in a tense, quiet alliance that eclipsed the victory.
SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — Félix Auger-Aliassime and Victoria Mboko have picked up where they left off to open the 2026 tennis season.
Auger-Aliassime and Mboko led Canada past China in the United Cup mixed teams event Sunday, winning the Group B round-robin tie 3-0.
The men’s No. 5-ranked Auger-Aliassime outplayed Zhang Zhizhen 6-4, 6-4 after Mboko — 18th in the women’s rankings — rallied from one set down to beat Lin Zhu 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.
The two Canadians then partnered in a 6-1, 6-3 mixed doubles win over Xiaodi You and Rigele Te.
Auger-Aliassime reached the U.S. Open semifinal and captured an ATP 250 title at the BNP Paribas Fortis European Open in Brussels, then reached the ATP Finals semifinals to end last season.
The 25-year-old from Montreal won his season-opening match for the first time since 2021.
“I can be very pleased with this first match of the year,” said Auger-Aliassime. “Tennis is about rhythm, playing important points under pressure, so you never know what to expect. I woke up this morning hoping for the best, and then I played some of my best tennis.”
Nineteen-year-old Mboko of Toronto rose from outside the top 300 to become a top-20 player in a breakthrough past season.
She won the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Montreal and finished 2025 on a five-match winning streak to claim the Hong Kong Open title.
Canada next plays Belgium in group play on Tuesday in the United Cup. The tournament finishes Jan. 11.

Canadiens’ Cole Caufield, Lane Hutson left off U.S. Olympic team
They won’t be joining Habs captain Nick Suzuki in Winter Games. Oliver Kapanen was selected to Team Finland.

Canadiens winger Cole Caufield and defenceman Lane Hutson won’t be playing in the Winter Olympics next month in Milano Cortina, Italy, unless called upon to be injury replacements.
When the U.S. team was announced on Friday morning, the two Habs didn’t appear on the initial Winter Games roster.
Caufield, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Friday, leads the Canadiens in goals with 20, while adding 20 assists in 40 games this season. The forward was also named the Molson Cup recipient for December after scoring five goals and adding eight assists during the month.
Hutson has six goals, 34 assists and a plus-12 differential this season. The reigning Calder Trophy winner for best rookie was tied for second in scoring in the league among defencemen entering Friday’s action.
The 5-foot-8, 176-pound Caufield was among the 44 players invited to the U.S. Olympic orientation camp last summer, while the 5-foot-9, 162-pound Hutson wasn’t.
“I just want to show them that I can defend — and defend at a high level,” Hutson said in December before the announcement.
“It would be a dream come true (to make the team). Just wearing the USA jersey is always really special and something I don’t take for granted. Thinking back to world juniors, how much fun it was, U.S. national team. It’s always so fun, and to do that would be really cool.”
Canadiens teammate Nick Suzuki was named to Team Canada’s Olympic roster on New Year’s Eve.

“I can’t wait to put on the Canadian jersey and hopefully bring home a gold medal,” the Canadiens captain said in a video posted on the team’s social media.
Suzuki was one of three Canadiens among the 42 players invited to Team Canada’s Olympic orientation camp last summer, along with defenceman Noah Dobson and goalie Samuel Montembeault, who was the third goalie for Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off last February.
On Friday, Oliver Kapanen was selected to Team Finland.
Kapanen scored in Montreal’s 7-5 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday. His 12 goals are tied for the league lead among rookies this season.
The 22-year-old forward, playing in his first full NHL season after an 18-game stint a year ago, has blossomed as the second-line centre on a line with Juraj Slafkovsky and Ivan Demidov.
A Finnish star who won’t be joining Kapanen in Italy is teammate Patrik Laine. He remains out with a core muscle injury.
Other Canadiens either named to the Olympics or on the cusp include Slafkovsky, who was one of six players already announced for Slovakia, alongside former Hab Tomas Tatar.
Alexandre Texier was one of six players named to Team France’s preliminary roster in June. In December they announced their full lineup with the exception of one player still to be named due to an agreement with the NHL. Texier is the lone Frenchman in the league and was notably omitted.
Czechia will also be announcing its lineup on Jan. 6. Goaltender Jakub Dobes could be chosen but faces steep competition from the likes of Anaheim’s Lukas Dostal and Philadelphia’s Daniel Vladar.
The 2026 Winter Olympics will be held from Feb. 6 to 22. Team Canada will play its first game in Milan on Feb. 12 against Czechia. The last time NHL players participated in the Winter Games was 2014 in Sochi, Russia, where Canada won the gold medal.
