Obama and the former first lady, Michelle Obama, were in the stands for Gauff’s first-round match at the 2023 US Open, where she defeated Germany’s Laura Siegemund.
The match was tense, as Gauff became frustrated with the slow pace of play dictated by the German.

How did Coco Gauff perform at Grand Slams in 2025?
After she failed to add to her Grand Slam tally in 2024, Gauff returned to major action with a point to prove this year.
She didn’t get off to the best of starts, losing to Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, but bounced back impressively at the French Open.
Gauff defeated Olivia Gadecki, Tereza Valentova, Marie Bouzkova, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Madison Keys, and Lois Boisson en route to her third major final.
There, she beat Sabalenka in a three-set thriller to win her second Grand Slam, becoming the first American winner of the French Open since Serena Williams.

Unfortunately for Gauff, she was unable to carry that form through the remainder of the year, as she proceeded to lose in the first round of Wimbledon to Dayana Yastremska.
She didn’t fare much better at the US Open, losing in the fourth round to a resurgent Naomi Osaka.
Those late-season disappointments shouldn’t overshadow her triumph in Paris, though, as Gauff is now a two-time Grand Slam champion, which is a remarkable achievement.
Perhaps she will rediscover that form and win another Grand Slam in 2026.
Gauff will have a chance to win her first Australian Open title next year, when the tournament begins on Sunday, January 18.
