That’s When I Knew I Was Done” – Jenson Button Reveals the Chilling Moment Max Verstappen Shattered His F1 Career

Max Verstappen’s arrival in Formula 1 has had a profound effect on the expectations of young drivers in the championship.

Since making his debut in 2014, aged just 17, he has been on a path towards becoming one of the greatest of all time. In 2025, he remains in the hunt for a fifth straight drivers’ championship.

Already, he has established himself as Red Bull’s best-ever signing, and there may be even more to come from him before he’s done.

Verstappen’s current contract expires at the end of 2028, and it’s almost frightening to think of what he might be able to achieve by then.

Verstappen won’t like what the paddock are saying about Red Bull, with suggestions that their engine for 2026 isn’t very good.

Although Verstappen won the Las Vegas Grand Prix, there are just two races left before the 2026 F1 regulations, and a new era beckons for everyone.

Jenson Button knew it was ‘time to retire’ after being overtaken by Max Verstappen

David Croft says Lewis Hamilton is greater than Verstappen, but conceded that it may only be a matter of time before he overtakes him.

Verstappen might have a Red Bull exit clause for 2026, and joining another team only to win with them would strengthen his cause for the top driver of all time.

Who is the greatest F1 driver of all time?

2009 champion Jenson Button recently gave him a nod when suggesting that the 28-year-old was one of the reasons why he retired.

Button said on Sky Sports F1 (22/11, 03:37): “I’ve seen it first-hand, him overtake me around Turn 3 in Brazil [2016]. I thought, ‘It’s time to retire’.”

Bernie Collins replied: “Max is very, very good at reading the grip of the track and reacting to the change in conditions.”

Can Max Verstappen win the 2025 F1 title?

With his victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Verstappen moved to within 42 points of Lando Norris, before a shock post-race disqualification for plank wear.

Now, the gap is just 24 points, and the most remarkable and unthinkable turnarounds of all time looks to be on. It can be done.

Arguably, he needs to win all remaining races (Qatar sprint included) to come out on top, but it isn’t virtually impossible anymore.

The impact of another surprise retirement would be clear. Verstappen could take the championship lead heading into Abu Dhabi in that situation, and set up one of the greatest finishes ever.
