The Chicago Cubs designated inelder Luis Vázquez for assignment earlier this week in order to make room on the 40-man roster for veteran free agent Jon Berti. Vázquez was recently traded by the Cubs to the Baltimore Orioles.
These kinds of transactions have occurred during the winter as the Cubs have released players who are subsequently traded for cash. Vázquez, who appeared in 11 games for the Cubs in 2024, demonstrates this once more.
Since being selected in the 2017 draft, Vázquez, 25, has been a member of the Cubs organization. The right-handed
The hitter, who is known for having excellent defensive skills on the field, advanced to Triple-A in 2023. Although Vázquez has started at second and third base, his outstanding glovework at shortstop accounts for a large portion of his value.

The Chicago Cubs officially announced two additions on Tuesday: the signing of veteran infielder Jon Berti and the trade for Ryan Pressly. The 35-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Cubs for the 2025 season after playing with the New York Yankees in 2024.
The Cubs assigned 25-year-old inelder Luis Vázquez to make place on the 40-man roster for Berti.
According to reports, Berti will receive a base salary of $2 million for the 2025 campaign, with an extra $1.3 million in incentives available.
During his two trips with the Cubs last season, Vázquez, who made his Major League debut with the team in 2024, saw very little action. On May 30, he was sent to Triple-A after initially being called up on May 21. In August, the inelder made his comeback to the major leagues, where he remained until the conclusion of the regular season. Vázquez participated in 11 games and made 14 plate appearances overall.

In 124 games throughout Double-A and Triple-A in 2023, Vázquez recorded an offensive breakout with 20 home runs and an OPS of.817. In 2024, Vázquez’s stats declined as he slashed.263/.347/.432 with the Iowa Cubs. During his brief stint in the major leagues, the right-handed hitter only went one for twelve.
Vázquez has the skill set to start at shortstop in Major League Baseball and has a tremendous glove at the position, but his bat is a major question mark, so it will be fascinating to see whether a team would take him up on a waiver.
